Give each painter the same scope

Share a list of surfaces, repairs, colors, access needs, and timing. Ask each company to identify exclusions. A detailed scope reveals whether a difference in price comes from preparation, materials, labor, or omitted work.

Ask these seven questions

  1. Which surfaces and repairs are included?
  2. How will loose paint, cracks, stains, and moisture concerns be addressed?
  3. What primer, finish product, sheen, and number of coats are specified?
  4. How will landscaping, floors, fixtures, and furnishings be protected?
  5. Who will be on-site, and how are changes approved?
  6. What is the schedule and weather-delay process?
  7. What does the written warranty cover, and what is excluded?

Verify the business

Confirm the business identity, appropriate insurance, relevant license requirements for any work beyond painting, and recent work similar to your project. Ask to see examples of the exact surfaces involved—especially stucco, metal details, or cabinets.

Choose from the complete proposal

Compare the scope and communication alongside price. Keep the final written estimate, approved colors, product specifications, change orders, payment terms, and walkthrough notes together.

Keep in mind

Requirements vary with project scope and jurisdiction; confirm any licensing or permitting questions with the relevant authority.
